Keroncong gaat terug tot de jaren 1600, toen de bevrijde slaven van de Portugese cultuur op het Maleisisch Schiereiland door de Nederlanders naar Indonesi\u00eb werden gebracht. De geschiedenis van de ontwikkeling is meestal ongrijpbaar, maar het werd verspreid onder veel mensen met verschillende culturele achtergronden die in de archipel woonden. Snel vooruit naar de jaren 1930 \u2013 nog steeds in de Nederlandse koloniale tijd \u2013 won het veel aan populariteit in Indonesi\u00eb en Nederland.
