Keroncong dates back to the 1600s, when freed slaves from Portuguese culture in the Malay Peninsula were brought to Indonesia by the Dutch. The history of its development is mostly elusive, but it was spread among many people from different cultural backgrounds living in the archipelago. Fast forward to the 1930s - still in the Dutch colonial era - it gained much popularity in Indonesia and the Netherlands.
