Hij vertelde dat Schubert zijn tijd ver vooruit was, omdat hij in de pianopartijen extra lagen aanbracht, waarmee hij richting gaf aan de interpretatie. Het was niet zo vreemd dat de veel oudere Goethe daar geen begrip voor op kon brengen. Aan de piano liet Bas horen hoe Schubert de vis en de krekel uitbeeldde en hoe die met een wisseling van toonsoorten en akkoorden de luisteraar in een andere wereld bracht.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tijdens het spelen van zijn transcripties liet Bas de klankschilderingen van Schubert goed horen zonder dat dat ten koste ging van de zanglijn. Dat was een knappe prestatie, want hij had zeker niet de makkelijkste liederen uitgezocht. De zaal werd steeds stiller, uit bewondering voor zijn expressieve spel in <em>Nachtviolen<\/em> en daarna voor zijn pianistisch uitdagende bewerking van <em>Der Musensohn<\/em>. Bij <em>Night and Dreams<\/em> kon je een speld horen vallen en Bas sloot zijn optreden af met een waar huzarenstuk. Bij de inleiding had hij verteld dat de beroemde pianist Gerald Moore de begeleiding van <em>On the Bruck<\/em> zwaarder vond dan de <em>Erlk\u00f6nig<\/em> met zijn beruchte triolen. Toen Bas zijn pianoversie van dit lied speelde, leek het alsof hij vier handen had! Een virtuoos hoogstandje, waarna terecht een ovationeel applaus losbarstte. In al zijn transcripties bleef Bas dienstbaar aan de muziek en aan de tekst.
