They had clearly studied the historical context surrounding the composers, enabling them to talk about it in an engaging and entertaining way between the lieds. The recital ‘An American in Paris’ thus became a colourful and lively performance in music and word.
Before the interval, the programme featured composers born in France who had also lived and worked in Paris for many years. We heard, in succession, works by Poulenc, Nadia Boulanger, Milhaud, Auric and Satie. Their serious side and modern approach, as well as their mischievous jokes and cabaret-style antics, were all brought to the fore. The programme after the interval featured American composers, most of whom had studied in Paris. The programme included works by Barber, Bernstein, Hageman, Rorem, Weill, Owens, Bolcom and Gershwin. A surprising choice was the composer Richard Hageman, born in Leeuwarden, who is unknown to many.

The duo gave a moving performance of the Three Songs Opus 10 by Samuel Barber to texts by James Joyce and revelled in two theatrical Cabaret Songs by William Bolcom. After generous applause, an encore was inevitable. That very fittingly became Trip to Paris by Poulenc. Both musicians took plenty of time after the concert to chat with the visitors while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat. Thanks to the two enthusiastic contact persons.
The listeners were introduced to a rich musical heritage where French refinement met American daring. Christina Koti and Jared Michaud moved effortlessly from the spoken introductions to the musical performances. With their programming, they completely fulfilled their goal of giving attention to lesser-known liederen and underrepresented composers. The fact that they have formed a fixed duo for six years was clearly audible. It was a feast for the ears!
