Bachtrack speaks of ‘an impressive amount of emotion’ conveyed by tenor Allan Clayton in Winterreise, one of Schubert's great song cycles. Clayton is also highly regarded on the opera stage. His companion Paul Lewis is a seasoned interpreter of Schubert's music. In the sonatas for his instrument, he is an authority, and it is special that this pianist with a mainly soloistic career performs in the Small Hall. He has also performed another Schubert cycle with Clayton: Die Schöne Müllerin. An engaging evening is guaranteed.

Schubert's Winterreise
Winterreise, a song cycle to lyrics by Wilhelm Müller, was created a year before Schubert's death. In 24 kaleidoscopic snapshots, Schubert paints the mood swings of a lost, wounded and lonely man. Few works of art have so shockingly depicted the torn essence of existence. And yet, listening to the cycle is a delightful experience, so mild and beautiful is the music in which Schubert's wrapped up his sombre message.
