Since Verschwiegene Lieder is about lied [..] from the first half of the 20th century by prominent poets and composers whose work was banned because of their Jewish origins or strong resistance to the German occupiers Liederbuch of Hafez, recorded in German by Hans Bethge, but based on the 14e-century Persian verses by Hafez and set to music by Viktor Ullmann, to comical in the Galgenlieder by Hanns Eisler, although the title suggests otherwise. On closer inspection, a hidden agenda could be suspected almost everywhere, carrying criticism of the ruling regime.

Not only did Robbert and Micha consistently hit the right tone amid all those differences, but the extensive introductions that Robbert gave between the blocks also made it an extra engaging recital. For a touch of light relief, there was an anecdote from Micha about chewing gum. In the audience were a number of prominent figures from the Dutch music world with whom the artists had also collaborated in the past, meaning the meet-and-greet afterwards somewhat resembled a reunion. All of this took place in the wonderful venue that Adrienne and Maarten consistently make available. The only minor downside was perhaps the disappointing number of attendees. Was that due to it coinciding with Mother's Day, as well as a crucial day for Ajax in the Eredivisie football league, as evidenced by the fireworks noise audible in the garden during the interval? Who can say. We hope for a larger turnout next time!
