Keroncong Anemoia
This programme is a journey in which the interwoven stories of the East and West are embodied through Keroncong and Western art songs. Keroncong dates back to the 1600s, when freed slaves from the Portuguese culture in the Malay Peninsula were brought to Indonesia by the Dutch. The history of its development is mostly elusive, but it was spread among many people from different cultural backgrounds living in the archipelago. Fast forward to the 1930s - still in the Dutch colonial era - it gained much popularity in Indonesia and the Netherlands. The three Keroncong songs we present in this concert have as their themes nature, longing for and romanticising the river Solo, which resembles roots, and thinking back to a loved one.
