biography

Cécile van de Sant received her diploma Performing Musician Cum Laude from the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam where she studied with Cora Canne Meijer, after which she continued her studies in New York with Marlena Kleinmann Malas. Cécile sang a wide variety of roles in operas by Monteverdi, Gluck, Mozart, Wagner, Britten and Philip Glass, among others. She also sang many Handel roles, also in numerous opera houses around the world. Cécile also has an extensive concert and oratorio repertoire including the great Bach works, the English oratorios, the orchestral songs of Mahler and Frank Martin. She has worked with famous conductors and sang in the Dutch premiere of Rihm's Deus Passus with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marcus Stenz. In honour of the 90ebirthday of Pierre Boulez she sang his Le Marteau sans Maître with the Nieuw Ensemble conducted by Ed Spanjaard.

She also sang many more song recitals with Thom Bollen, Thom Jansen, Nathalie Doucet and now with Kelvin Grout. Recent and upcoming engagements include Brahms’ Alt-Rhapsody with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at Vredenburg Friday and the Sunday Morning Concert at the Concertgebouw, Selige Sehnsucht by Willem Jeths with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Strauss’ Electricity and Boris Godunov at the NTR Saturday Matinee, Concertgebouw. The title role in Falco's oratorio Santo Antonio at the Misteria Paschalia Festival in Kraków with Europa Galante and Fabio Biondi. A tour with the Stabat mater By Pergolesi with Combattimento Consort, Rihms Deus Passus with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marcus Stenz at Vredenburg. Mahler's third symphony and Das Lied von der Erde with the Göttingen Symphonie Orchester, Der Cornet by Frank Martin conducted by Jac van Steen with the Residentie Orkest and a tour with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in America with Handel's Atalanta.
