Kickstart with Kir

They came by train from Paris, Jared Michaud and Christina Koti, to give a vibrant start to Vrienden van het Lied's concert activities in the Den Bosch region with their programme ‘An American in Paris’ on Sunday 10 May in Brabant.

Jared and Christina brilliantly interpreted lied works by composers on both sides of the ocean, such as: Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, William Bolcom, Nadia Boulanger, Francis Poulenc, Eric Satie and Kurt Weill. In their recital, the musicians painted a picture of what American composers experienced in the Paris of a century ago. They also illustrated through music and words the interaction between French and American composers and the mutual marks they left behind, such as cabaret and jazzy influences. Well-known and lesser-known repertoire was given a personal touch with a unique story by baritone Jared Michaud and pianist Christina Koti, based on experiences in the here and now as a foreigner in another country. Jared and Christina concluded their concert with, how could it be otherwise, a lied by George and Ira Gershwin. With Love is here to stay they took everyone present to their hearts.

Over 20 members from Den Bosch and Eindhoven managed to find their way to the new venue in the Den Bosch region. They were happy to linger a little longer in the hospitable home of Ien Bouwmans and Peter Perquin to chat and share a glass of kir with each other and the musicians, as a toast to a successful first concert in Rosmalen. A brand new member, who by his own admission has little knowledge of lied, attended this concert in Rosmalen and also another concert in Zwolle. He calls it a ‘warm immersion in wonderful music with the heartfelt hospitality of hosts and hostesses’. He is welcome to stay... and join other members and non-members at the second concert in the Den Bosch region on Sunday afternoon, 4 October: Amor, Sol, Saudade - South song by soprano Maria Portela Larisch and pianist Jou-an Chen.
