At the time of Romanticism, poetry served partly to exchange ideas across borders. For instance, famous Russian poets like Pushkin, Fet and Mey made beautiful translations of poems by such luminaries as Heine, Goethe, Voltaire and Lord Byron. The sometimes somewhat free translations were a source of inspiration for Russian song composers of the time, from Glinka to Rachmaninov. For this programme, the duo chose the finest examples, sometimes with different translations or settings of the same poem.
